What are veneers?

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) describes a veneer as a “thin piece of porcelain used to recreate the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel.”

Veneers are essentially shell-like pieces of ceramic that are custom-made to fit the contour and color of your original tooth enamel.

New forms of porcelain are being used which are stronger and reflect light much like the natural enamel of your teeth. Qualified cosmetic dentists also use digital imaging technology for quick and convenient restorations for busy patients.

Because veneers are less invasive than traditional crowns or braces, dentists and patients alike rely on them for a number of cosmetic corrections. They are an ideal treatment option for people with small misalignments, gaps, and stained or chipped teeth.

Other orthodontic and cosmetic dentistry treatments, such as teeth whitening and dental crowns, can be used in conjunction with veneers as part of a comprehensive dental treatment plan.

Porcelain is the most commonly used material for veneers and is preferred for correcting the shape and color of the natural teeth. Veneers can last from 10 to 20 years with proper care and maintenance. It’s important to be aware of the financial investment as veneers will need to be replaced eventually.

How are veneers placed?

For veneers that are pre-made (also known as prefabricated), the placement generally takes place in only one appointment.

For veneers that are custom-made in a laboratory, the procedure will take place over the span of two appointments. Custom-made veneers are recommended, and the process for development and placement is short and nearly pain-free.

Local anesthesia is not needed unless a patient has hypersensitivity in their teeth.

The tooth where the veneer will be placed is cleaned thoroughly so that the dentist can determine the correct shade for the restoration. To make room for the veneer, the dentist will remove a small amount of the enamel off the natural tooth. An impression of the tooth is then made and sent to the laboratory while a temporary veneer is placed.

Once the custom-made porcelain veneers are ready, the dentist will once again clean the tooth with pumice and water. An adhesive is used to fit and contour the veneer to the natural tooth. Like many similar dental procedures involving attachments, the dentist will use light curing to ensure the piece is fully attached.

A follow-up session may be scheduled to make sure the fit is comfortable and effective.

Are you a candidate for veneers?

Porcelain veneers can help target a variety of cosmetic and structural problems, and as a result, patients considering this treatment are typically addressing multiple dental issues. Porcelain veneers can benefit individuals with:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Gaps
  • Minor misalignment
  • Discoloration

In order for porcelain veneers to be placed, you’ll need to be in overall good dental health. Your dentists will assess your periodontal and oral health, your commitment to proper oral hygiene, your cosmetic goals, and the amount of healthy enamel on your natural teeth.

While porcelain veneers are a successful solution for many, individuals with dental conditions like tooth decay, gum disease, bruxism, and related tooth and gum infections may not qualify for veneers.

Patients must be aware that veneers are a permanent decision. During the process of veneer placement, dentists remove a layer of enamel to attach the porcelain piece. This means that each veneer will eventually need to be replaced with another custom-made veneer or with an alternative restoration.
