It’s Never Too Late for Adult Braces

It’s Never Too Late for Adult Braces
Now more than ever, adults can take advantage of modern dentistry to achieve a perfect smile. In fact, adult braces are a trending orthodontic treatment to achieve a pearly white smile.

If your dream is to have brighter, straighter teeth, don’t be turned off by the idea of adult braces. You may think the time for fixing your crooked or crowded teeth has come and gone, but you’re wrong.

Whether you are unhappy with your smile or suffering from a poor bite causing wear and tear on your teeth, Heroes Dental has the solution for you.

Debunking A Myth

A common misconception many people have regarding orthodontic treatment is that braces are not as effective on adult teeth.

The belief is that an adult’s teeth will not move as easily as a child’s or teenager’s. While it is true that younger children and teens have much more pliable bodies, this factor does not in any way change the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment for adults. Length of treatment, however, may be affected.

Take the following example:

An adult and teenager have similar crowding issues. The length of treatment for the adult may be 22 months while the adolescent will only need to wear braces for 18 months. Both patients will have achieved the desired outcome – just at different time frames.

The Case For Adult Braces

Adults tend to be more responsible and compliant to rules regarding their orthodontic treatment.

Because significant changes need to be made your dental hygiene routine when wearing braces, younger individuals may forget or feel lazy about properly caring for braces. Adults, on the other hand, have a better understanding of the financial investment that is involved with braces.

The decision to get braces as an adult is also a very intentional move. As an adult, you are more likely to do exactly what it takes to achieve the best results from your treatment.

An adult will invest plenty of time and effort to ensure they are receiving the best treatment for their budget and lifestyle.

The types of braces available to adults at Heroes Dental are:

Metal Braces

Years ago, wearing braces meant dealing with the inconveniences of bulky and unsightly metal bands. Today, metal braces are less intimidating.

Now, metal brackets are made of a high-grade stainless steel, which are cemented to the front of each tooth and connected by a single wire across the bottom and top.

Metal braces may not be visually appealing for most adults but they are a heavy-duty and less expensive treatment option for achieving straighter teeth.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are much like traditional metal braces except these are made of a transparent ceramic material.

This means the individual brackets are less visible to the outside world. While they are slightly more expensive, clear braces are a common alternative to metal braces.

Adults can opt for clear, pearl, or white-colored elastic bands (ligatures) to enjoy a fully concealed look.

Did you know that almost 20% of #braces wearers are adults? #HeroesDental #TIL Click To Tweet

Treatment times for any of these options will vary depending on your individual dental needs.

Whether you are looking for traditional or clear braces, Heroes Dental will help develop the perfect orthodontic treatment plan for you.

3 Reasons You Should Consider Adult Braces

Braces are now cheaper and better-looking. If you never got braces as a teenager simply because it didn’t fit into the family budget, now is the time to take advantage.

Whether you opt for the more budget-friendly metal braces or you go for the inconspicuous clear braces, advances in modern dentistry and orthodontics have made each and every treatment option an appealing, comfortable, and cost-effective choice.

Braces can help you avoid dental problems and other health issues.A misaligned bite and crooked, crowded teeth can lead to dental problems and overall health issues over time. Because people are living much longer, the resulting problems of poor dental care can become cumbersome before you know it.

Have you noticed that you are not chewing food properly, are unintentionally biting your cheek, or are you feeling jaw pain and having headaches often? These are all tell-tale signs that the state of your dental health may not be ideal.

Teeth can shift at any age. You may have had perfectly straight teeth in your childhood but there is no guarantee that your teeth will remain completely upright throughout adulthood.

If you have noticed some crowding lately, don’t be alarmed. Healthy teeth can move at any age, even after orthodontic treatment. You may simply be facing natural changes to your mouth and jaw.

Invest in your health and happiness with orthodontic treatment from Heroes Dental.

Adult braces are truly an investment for better health and happiness. Now that braces have the potential to be more convenient, comfortable, and virtually invisible for your lifestyle, there is nothing holding you back from a perfect smile.

Invisalign FAQs

Invisalign FAQs

Does the thought of getting braces make your child nervous? Even as an adult you may be hesitant to get the orthodontic treatment you need because of how traditional braces look.

What if we here at Heroes Dental told you that straightening the alignment of your teeth can be much simpler than having clunky braces in your mouth?

You may be wondering how. One word – Invisalign.

Our Heroes Dental orthodontists at our various Rio Grande Valley dental offices receive questions about Invisalign on a daily basis, and in order to shed some light on the subject, we have created this list of frequently asked questions to soothe any concerns you may have about you or your child’s dental alignment when it comes to these amazing orthodontic tools.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a brand of aligners that aid in straightening out your teeth. These aligners act as an alternative dental alignment treatment to traditional braces.

What are the aligners made of?

The substance that Invisalign aligners are created with is a special thermoplastic material. These custom made aligners somewhat resemble teeth-whitening trays.

How does it work? What is the treatment process?

Your Invisalign-trained orthodontist maps which teeth the aligners should gently shift into the correct position with the appropriate placement of controlled force and which other teeth need to stay in place. A specially designed set of aligners are then created for you.

Every two weeks, a new set of aligners are then sent to you with further adjustments to continue the realignment of your teeth.

Do I have to wear them for a long time?

Our patients participate in this treatment for an average of 12 months. However, this time frame is dependent on the severity of the misalignment of you or your child’s teeth. Our Heroes Dental orthodontists will be able to provide you with a more accurate time frame.

I’m considering getting braces. Would it be better to get Invisalign instead?

It depends on what’s right for you or your child. Naturally, you will want to take the advice of an experienced orthodontist before making a decision, as they’ll be able to provide you with a greater level of insight.

But there are a few benefits of Invisalign that are worth noting:

  • Invisalign is comparable to the price of braces.
  • They are invisible in the sense that they are completely see through. No embarrassing metallic grin.
  • They are removable, unlike braces.
  • You aren’t restricted on what you eat during treatment.
  • They are removable when brushing and allow flossing, something difficult to do with braces.
  • No metal or wires to irritate the mouth or gum.
  • They are a great alternative to those who suffer from metal allergies.
  • You will spend less time in the orthodontist’s chair because you aren’t constantly having them tightened like traditional braces.

With all of these benefits over traditional braces, Invisalign is quickly becoming the go-to choice for many patients.

Are there certain items that I cannot eat when I’m wearing my Invisalign aligners?

Unlike with metal braces, with Invisalign, there are no dietary restrictions. You can eat anything so long as you remove the aligners.

Also, the aligners have to be removed for proper oral hygiene such as brushing after a meal.

#Eat what you want with #Invisalign aligners Click To Tweet

How will it affect my life?

There may be some discomfort during the first 2 to 3 days as your mouth becomes accustomed to the aligners.

In order to be truly effective, the aligners must remain in place for 20 to 22 hours a day. You or your child may experience a slight lisp when speaking the first few days, but after you have become accustomed to the aligners, speech should return to normal.

I have braces now. Can I switch to Invisalign?

Although it may be a possibility, you should always consult with your orthodontist first to see if switching from braces to Invisalign is the best option for you.

What about the bridge work I have on several of my teeth?

Since bridge work connects a few of your teeth together to other surrounding teeth, the aligners may not work effectively. Invisalign aligners are designed to shift teeth individually, following what your orthodontist has mapped out for you.

How do I take care of my aligners?

The go to method for cleaning your aligners would be with the Invisalign Cleaning system.

Or if you prefer, you can brush the aligners and rinse them off with lukewarm water.

What happens after the treatment?

As with braces, you may need to wear a retainer to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions.

Vivera creates their retainers in the same innovative, state-of-the-art fashion as Invisalign aligners by either scanning your teeth or building the retainer off of an impression. The two together are compatible as they are 30% stronger than other leading retainers on the market.

Consult with your Invisalign-trained orthodontist to confirm if post-treatment is needed to secure that perfect smile.

Is it expensive?

Invisalign is comparable to braces in terms of pricing, but as other medical treatments, pricing is susceptible to specifics that could determine costs such as:

  • Where you live.
  • Severity of the misaligned teeth.
  • Treatment goals.
  • How long you are in treatment.

However, payment plans may be an option you can discuss with our orthodontists.

Also, Invisalign is covered by many dental insurance policies, so refer to your particular personal plan to see if you are covered.

How do I get started?

Aligners are the future of dental correction and we want to help all heroes – big or small – get the best smile possible.

9 Amazing Tips for Protecting Your Retainer

9 Amazing Tips for Protecting Your Retainer

At Heroes Dental, our job isn’t only to help you reach your orthodontic goals but to also help you maintain a beautiful and healthy lifelong smile.

While braces help correct imperfections in your smile, it’s the retainer that keeps your teeth straight after your braces have been taken off. Your retainer plays a vital role in your treatment and so it is important that you follow the guidelines set by your orthodontist when it comes to using it.

Equally important as using your retainer as directed is taking care of them. Whether it’s your child, your teen, or yourself using a retainer, it is important to follow a few guidelines in order to keep them safe and get the most out of their use.

Our orthodontists here at Heroes Dental are happy to offer you 9 amazing tips for protecting your retainer.

  1. Keep your retainer safe in a retainer case. Retainers are fairly soft and can be easily damaged (or thrown away) when left out of a case. A brightly colored case can serve as a great visual reminder to take it along with you, especially as you are rushing around during the summer months.
  2. Keep your retainer clean. Your retainer can build up bacteria, mold, tartar, and germs – and then you put it in your mouth. Avoid these potential hazards by regularly cleaning your retainer with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste or soaking it in a glass of cool water with baking soda. This will help prevent any bacteria from spreading throughout your mouth as well as stop odors.
  3. Take your retainer out before a meal. You’ll want to remove your retainer before you eat and place it in its container. This will help you avoid getting food or plaque trapped in your teeth. But just be careful and avoid placing it on your plate or in a napkin where it can accidentally get thrown away.
  4. Keep your retainer away from the heat. Your retainer is created to fit your mouth perfectly and help you in the last leg of your orthodontic treatment. But excessive heat can easily cause it to melt or warp. You’ll want to keep your retainer away from heat sources like windowsills, dishwashers, hot cars, and even hot drinks. And while you might think disinfecting your retainer in boiling water is a great strategy, the heat is only going to destroy it.
Keep your #retainer clean, safe in a case & away from heat #HeroesDental #Tips Click To Tweet
  1. Avoid using any chemicals to clean your retainer. There’s no need for you to use any alcohol-based mouthwashes to keep your retainer clean. Water and toothpaste will do the trick. Or if you really want a clean retainer, you can soak it in mild vinegar. Anything more can potentially ruin the retainer.
  2. You may need a new retainer eventually. Like anything else, a retainer can wear out and feel odd in your mouth. This may be a sign that you need to replace your retainer. This does not mean, however, that you should try to make any alterations yourself – leave that to the professionals at Heroes Dental. If you feel some discomfort, visit your orthodontist and allow them to make the proper corrections.
  3. Brush your teeth before using your retainer. Using a retainer with dirty teeth is only going to make the retainer dirty and potentially spread bacteria in your mouth. It is also worth noting that you should never brush your teeth with your retainer on as you really won’t clean your teeth properly. First, brush your teeth, and then brush your retainer since are you already in the motion.
  4. Be gentle when putting it on and taking it off. Your retainer can be relatively fragile and you’ll want to be gentle with it as your put it on or remove it. Many people have a habit of flipping the retainer off with their tongue but this is an easy way to break it. Avoid using too much force when taking it off.

  1. Just take care of it! This is easier said than done – especially for teens and children. Retainers can break easily because they are made of plastic and wires, so it is essential that they are taken care of in a safe and caring manner. They should always be kept in a case when not in use and should be out of reach of toddlers and pets.

Heroes Dental Offers Orthodontic Treatment For Heroes of All Ages

Heroes Dental Offers Orthodontic Treatment For Heroes of All Ages

Studies have shown that one of the first things people notice about you is your teeth. And at Heroes Dental we want to make sure you absolutely love your smile.

What is orthodontics?

The American Academy of Orthodontics describes orthodontics as the area of dentistry that diagnoses, prevents, and treats dental and facial irregularities.

If your dentist has recommended orthodontic treatment, it important to take action immediately because prolonged dental issues will only lead to bigger problems. The 21st century has witnessed advances in orthodontic dentistry practices and our orthodontic experts at Heroes Dental can determine the right treatment for you.

When is the best time to start orthodontic treatment?

The best time to start treatment is soon after your dentist or an orthodontist recommends it. If you have questions about the alignment of your teeth, or the quality of your bite, book an appointment at Heroes Dental and our orthodontists can answer all your questions and determine if treatment is right for you.

The types of problems that stem from dental misalignment can include difficulty with biting, speaking, or chewing, which are often caused by crowded or misplaced teeth.

Other frequently recognized orthodontic issues relate to the inability to adequately close your lips or a jaw that frequently shifts positions or makes sounds as you move it.

The orthodontists at Heroes Dental have the skills required to diagnose orthodontic problems and the training to successfully treat them.

Orthodontics For Kids

The American Academy of Orthodontics suggests that for children, orthodontic examination should begin no later than the age of 7. This is because, by this age, tooth development allows for a better analysis of future bone structure and tooth movement. An orthodontist can accurately determine if there are developing dental problems or if a child’s alignment is developing properly.

At Heroes Dental, we monitor and keep track of your child’s dental development in case early intervention is necessary.

Orthodontics For Teens

The important thing to understand is that recommended treatment is not only effective but necessary.

If your teenager insists on putting their orthodontic treatment on hold, it might be because they don’t want to go through an awkward stage or maybe they’ve heard stories about the process being painful.

At Heroes Dental, we believe that orthodontic treatment can look good, and we have a personalized approach to find the best solution that fits your teenager, whether it’s traditional braces or Invisalign.

Orthodontics for Adults

Adults often require orthodontic treatment as a result of having ignored their dental health for way too long. Even retiring your retainer routine at a younger age can cause a relapse in orthodontic problems as you enter adulthood.

If the thought of being too old for metal braces has you spooked from booking an appointment to begin treatment, don’t forget that Heroes Dental can also provide you with Invisalign.

Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces and is one of the most advanced clear aligner systems out there.

Heroes Dental Orthodontics: The Benefits of Straight Teeth

Heroes Dental Orthodontics: The Benefits of Straight Teeth
What do you think about when you hear the word – “orthodontics”?

If your mind’s eye envisions braces, brackets, wires, and dentists, you’re not wrong at all. In fact, if you look up ‘Orthodontics’ in the dictionary, you’ll find a definition that runs along the lines of, “the treatment of irregularities in the teeth”.

But at Heroes Dental, our definition is slightly different. For us, Orthodontics is the art of beautifying teeth, and that’s exactly what our Heroes Dental Orthodontic experts do.

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that corrects improperly positioned teeth and jaws, leading to a more pleasing smile. And our experts are ecstatic to let you know all about the benefits of orthodontic treatment.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Braces, whether traditional metal ones, clear-styled, or Invisalign – which are all offered at Heroes Dental – provide a tremendous number of benefits that are guaranteed to keep you smiling for a lifetime. These advantages include:

It’s very common for patients with misaligned teeth to have a lisp, which can make it difficult to pronounce certain words at times, and thus affect confidence. Crooked teeth and overbites can even cause speech impediments that lead to issues with school and work.

Many speech pathologists highly recommend braces to correct lisps caused by improperly positioned teeth.

Having too many crooked teeth actually turns them into what we call “crowded teeth” and they compromise our chewing and digestive system. Orthodontic treatment can resolve issues associated with this problem, but it’s important to understand that during treatment, you must watch what you eat as certain foods can damage braces.

When misaligned teeth overlap, they don’t perform their vital functions properly and make it easier for food particles and bacteria to get trapped in between. Once your orthodontic treatment is over, and your teeth are straight and beautiful, brushing and flossing become much easier.

Periodontitis is a disease caused by bacteria in dental plaque causing infections in the gums. How does one develop oral plaque? It’s quite simple.

Poor oral hygiene creates oral plaque and bacteria which in turn cause periodontitis and gingivitis. When you improve your gum health, you lower the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and tooth decay as well. It’s very important to understand the seriousness of gum health, being that tooth decay and gum disease are highly linked to heart disease and high blood pressure.

Misaligned and crowded teeth wear unevenly, putting pressure on the jaw and resulting in continuous chronic headaches. Don’t wait until the headaches become unbearable. Heroes Dental recommends you to take action immediately.

Misaligned and crowded teeth don’t have the exceptional support of each other, so they are a lot more prone to breaking on a forceful impact. At Heroes Dental we always recommend using a mouthguard during sports to protect your smile from an unexpected dental injury. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find a mouthguard that fits properly because of crowded teeth.

Confidence is the biggest benefit of them all. When you only have one chance at a first impression, why not make it a great one? It’s very common to be self-conscious about crooked teeth, gaps, and overbites, but it can all be corrected with the help of our experienced and expert Heroes Dental Orthodontic team.

At Heroes Dental, smiling is our favorite things to do, and we want it to be yours too! If you’ve been recommended to receive orthodontic treatment, don’t wait too long. Contact Heroes Dental today at any of our locations throughout South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley to schedule your first appointment to begin orthodontic treatment.
